The future of our Earth depends on everyone doing their part. Even something that may seem small is far from insignificant if everyone is doing it. Imagine if every person in America recycled one extra thing this year. That would be millions and millions of additional boxes, bottles, and cans being recycled rather than put in landfills!

Wait- bottles? While many people know that you can recycle the cardboard boxes an online delivery arrives in or a soda can after you finish drinking in, fewer know for sure what to do with glass. We feel strongly that education is vital to increasing the rate of recycling. We are here to answer the question “Can you recycle glass bottles?” and so much more!

Can You Recycle Glass Bottles in the State of California?

California takes recycling very seriously. That is why our state does so much to both encourage and regulate recycling. In fact, this is why our CRV recycling program was established.

Several different types of recycled beverage containers, including glass bottles, can be recycled in curbside recycling bins or redeemed for California Refund Value (CRV) at a local buyback center. While you can put glass bottles right into the recycling bin, why would you? You’re throwing away money! Instead, save up your glass bottles and recycle them in a way that actually earns you money.

California recyclers and processors who handle CRV glass are regulated by CalRecycle’s Division of Recycling (DOR). You can check out the DOR official notices for glass payment information, including handling fees, processing fees, scrap value, and quality incentive payments.

Glass CA CRV Bottles

At this point, it is important to make it explicitly clear that all glass bottles must be labeled “CA Cash Refund”. Generally this means that glass soda, water, and beer bottles qualify, but liquor or wine do not. We encourage you to check each bottle before attempting to recycle your load. This is because if non-CA CRV glass bottles are mixed in with CA CRV bottles, the entire bag is considered NON-CRV. That would be a shame to waste potentially recyclable items, and a few extra minutes is all it takes to avoid this mistake. When in doubt, check the label on the container!

Recycle Glass Bottles From Home

After asking the question “Can you recycle glass bottles?” your next question is probably “Can I do it from home?” Yes and yes! If you live in the City of Irvine, California, Recycle From Home™ picks up and pays you for your CA CRV recycling items such as aluminum cans, plastic containers, and glass bottles. If it says CA CRV on your containers, we’ll pay you for them. It really is as simple as that! All you need to do is schedule your first pickup to get started.
